Phishing

Phishing is a type of cyberattack that involves deceiving individuals into disclosing sensitive information, such as usernames, passwords, or financial details, by posing as a trustworthy entity.

Typically carried out via email, phishing attempts may also occur through other communication channels like SMS or social media.

Phishing attacks often involve:

  • Spoofed Emails: Fake emails that appear to come from legitimate organisations or known contacts, designed to trick recipients into clicking malicious links or opening harmful attachments.
  • Fake Websites: Fraudulent websites that mimic legitimate sites to capture login credentials or personal information.
  • Social Engineering: Manipulative tactics to exploit human psychology, encouraging victims to provide confidential information.

Phishing can lead to severe consequences, including identity theft, financial loss, and unauthorised access to sensitive systems. Protecting against phishing involves being cautious with unsolicited communications, verifying sources, and using security measures like anti-phishing software and multi-factor authentication.
