Ransomware

Ransomware is a type of malicious software that encrypts a victim’s files or locks their computer system, rendering the data or system inaccessible.

The attacker then demands a ransom payment, typically in cryptocurrency, in exchange for the decryption key or to restore access to the affected files.

Key characteristics of ransomware include:

  • Encryption: The ransomware encrypts files on the victim’s device or network, making them unreadable without the decryption key.
  • Ransom Demand: A message is displayed, often with instructions on how to pay the ransom and a deadline for payment.
  • Potential Consequences: If the ransom is not paid, the attacker may threaten to permanently delete the encrypted files or expose sensitive data.

Ransomware attacks can lead to significant data loss, operational disruption, and financial impact. Prevention involves regular backups, up-to-date security software, and cautious handling of email attachments and links.
