Fortinet NSE Certification Program Updates

On October 1st 2023 Fortinet will start with a new Network Security Expert (NSE) certification program. Read our blog for answers on the frequently asked questions about this new program.

Why is Fortinet changing the NSE program and creating new certifications?

The new certification structure offers an easier and more streamlined ramp-up for people who want to start a career in cybersecurity. It includes five (5) proficiency levels with multiple certifications per level, and allows people to more easily identify the correct courses and exams according to their job needs and career paths.

The program also includes a new digital badging system, to provide better identification of the specific skills and knowledge acquired in a complex industry that supports various roles across multiple cybersecurity solutions and industry verticals.

What are the requirements for the new certifications?

The new certification structure includes five (5) proficiency levels, some with multiple certifications per level. Each certification requires passing a minimum number of exams.

Is there an expiration date for the new NSE certifications?

Yes, the following certifications are active for two (2) years from when the certification was achieved:

  • Fortinet Certified Fundamentals (FCF)
  • Fortinet Certified Associate (FCA)
  • Fortinet Certified Professional (FCP)
  • Fortinet Certified Engineer (FCE)

Exception: The Fortinet Certified Expert (FCX) certification is active for three years.

Each time a certification is recertified for two years, the expiration date is extended for an additional two years from the date the recertification requirement is met, for example:

  • I achieve my FCP in Network Security certification on November 1, 2023. I receive my certification with an expiration date of November 1, 2025. After that, I take one of the FCE in Network Security exams on February 1, 2025. The new expiration date of my FCP in Network Security certification is now February 1, 2027.
  • I achieve my FCP in Security Operations certification on December 1, 2023. I receive my certification with an expiration date of December 1, 2025. After that I take two electives for the same certification, the first one on January 1, 2025, the second one on April 1, 2025. The new expiration date of my FCP in Security Operations is now April 1, 2027.

Are the NSE exams and courses going to change?

No immediate changes will happen to the content of our NSE courses and exams by the time the new certifications are launched (October 1st, 2023).

What will happen with my existing certifications on October 1, 2023?

Fortinet will continue awarding NSE 1 to 8 certifications until October 1, 2023. After this date, Fortinet will honor all NSE 1 to 8 certifications until their expiration date. You will not be able to recertify NSE 1 to 8 certifications after October 1, 2023.

Example:  “I am currently NSE 4 certified. What is required to achieve one of the new certifications?”

If you passed the NSE 4 FortiOS exam on or after October 1, 2021 and want to become a Fortinet Certified Professional (FCP), you can take a minimum of one of the exams listed below–before October 1, 2023–to achieve the new certification:

The expiration date of your Fortinet Certified Professional (FCP) certification will be two years from the date you passed the last exam required for the certification.
