Authentication

Authentication is a critical cybersecurity process used to verify the identity of a user, device, or system before granting access to resources.

It ensures that the entity requesting access is indeed who or what it claims to be. This process typically involves the presentation of credentials, such as a password, PIN, biometric data (like fingerprints or facial recognition), or security tokens.

There are several types of authentication methods:

  • Single-Factor Authentication (SFA): Uses one form of verification, such as a password.
  • Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Requires two different forms of verification, such as a password and a text message code.
  • Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Uses two or more independent credentials for added security.
  • Authentication is a fundamental aspect of cybersecurity as it helps prevent unauthorised access to sensitive information, systems, and networks, thereby protecting against data breaches and cyber attacks.
