Intrusion Prevention System (IPS)

An Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) is a network security solution designed to detect and prevent potential threats by actively analysing and blocking malicious traffic in real-time.

An IPS monitors network traffic for signs of suspicious or harmful activity, such as attempted exploits or known attack patterns, and takes immediate action to stop these threats before they can cause harm.

Key functions of an IPS include:

  • Real-time monitoring and analysis of network traffic
  • Detection and prevention of known and unknown threats
  • Blocking malicious traffic and alerting security teams

Implementing an IPS involves:

  • Deploying the IPS in-line within the network to inspect traffic
  • Configuring detection and prevention rules based on threat intelligence
  • Continuously updating and tuning the system to address emerging threats

An IPS enhances network security by providing proactive threat prevention and minimising the risk of security breaches, ensuring the integrity and safety of an organisation's IT environment.
